sēlah.

(pronounced SEE-LUH)

‘Selah’ is a Hebrew word referring to a voluntary and intentional pause for reflection.

This Hebrew word is included 71 times in the Psalms.  It is actually a musical term that means a suspension of the music, or a pause.  It comes from a root word that means to weigh.  It indicates a pause in the music to weigh what the song is saying.  It is a moment of reflection or time given to consider the message.

A few other translations and versions render Selah differently.
The Amplified Bible says, “Pause, and think of that.”
The Passion Translation says, “Pause in His presence.”
The basic idea is the same – we are to take some time to reflect  – STOP. PAUSE. LISTEN.
Often in times of pausing, God gives us a revelation that transforms our perspective, bringing us closer to Him. Selah positions us to hear His voice and be in His presence.

An almost identical word, Sela, means ‘a massive rock cliff’. It is said that when Selah is spoken, the words are carved in stone in the throne room of the heavens.
